Who is Silk Smitha ?

Born as Vijayalakshmi to a poor family in Eluru (Andhra Pradesh, India) on December 2, 1960. She left school after 4th standard to become a film star. She moved to Madras now Chennai which was the center of South Indian film Industry. There she found a sponsor who renamed her Smitha and she started her film career.  She soon became famous for her bold roles on screen. In 1979 film "Vandi Chakkaram" she got her first major break where she played a girl named Silk. After that she became famous as Silk Smitha. Her hot item numbers and Cabarets were considered an essential part of the 80's cinema. She starred in over 200 Tamil,Telugu,Malayalam, Kannada and some hindi films too. She lived a glamorous on screen life but her off screen life was lonely which led to a tragic end. She faced financial crisis and also failed attempts to turn a film producer. She was found dead in her apartment in Chennai in 1996. While many claimed her death was a suicide, the real reason behind her death still remains a mystery.
