Rob and Kristen - Hands Off, He's Mine!

It's not often i can sit down and read anything substantially interesting in glossy magazines or newspaper articles, when talking about Celebrities and their 'sexual body language' that interests me. I can be very hyper critical when someone who calls themselves 'Dr this or that' claiming they are a world wide known 'Body Language Expert' and yet, have not done any form of Psychology - whether it be clinical or behavioural...that tends to get my hackles rising because to understand Body Language (Kinesics), you need to understand the way Human Psychology also works (just my little pet peeve). Oh i know there are some people out there, that have questioned my assessment of say...oh Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. But to be perfectly truthful - and i always am  =)
The only reason they do question it, is because they don't believe it. And they don't believe it because well...Kristen is not with Rob, Rob is not dating Kristen, but everyone else in the Western Hemisphere!

An article in the Mail Online (yes i know but bear with me) suggests that 'Hands' are a very good indicator in BL, and that a woman who wants every other woman around her to know that 'HE IS MINE' will show indicators 'physical expressions' of just how much that 'man' means to them. Putting up a very clear barrier to anyone else who believes they will hold interest. It is both possessive and suggestive, in that they allow not only the man to be aware of their possessiveness, but any woman who would hold an interest in their 'man' will see it also as not only a threat but a very clear statement.

I'm not as i said, usually one to read celeb articles of this kind of description; mainly due to the fact that those that claim they know what they are talking about, fall short, because they 'over compensate' their knowledge and 'over exaggerate' their findings. Sex Therapists i get a really good kick out of. Yes, they are widely used when it comes to problems in the 'bedroom department' but please, we all know they get paid 'pretty good money' for writing up articles in newspapers on 'how to spruce up your sex life' and then talk about celebrities as if they 'know what is missing' in their lives, without even consulting them in the first place...but i digress.

Maybe I'm in the wrong line of work and should be selling my knowledge to say....The Sun newspaper in the UK? Hmm...
So...although the article does not have Kristen going all 'possessive' on her man, the BL is very clear and the examples that are shown are clearly defined as woman, letting other women know to 'Stay The Heck Away' this guy is not for the taking and in discussing it on the wonderfully apt 'Robsten Angels Board' i thought i would bring the discussing up as a topic for my post today.

Hands off gesture; also known as 'Possessive Barrier' - or Possessive Posturing, as clear signals that a person is making sure that the one they are with are completely theirs and no one else's. The examples the article use are of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. A lot of people would look upon this relationship as a very showmancy type, because they seem to adore the spotlight on them, but that isn't always the case. Some dislike the whole reason behind the relationship and find that while Brad Pitt is still adulated for his good looks even as he gets older, Angelina looks like the simpering female; clinging desperately onto the man everyone wants and adores (sounds vaguely familiar of the excuses being used for another couple - doesn't it?)

But that is just one handful of opinions that are usually generated by jealousy men and women - each to their own i suppose, but in BL it is actually seen as Possessive Posturing. She is sending a very clear signal to every envious female out there that 'Brad is mine!' Whether it is at a public event, such as the celebs in this article show as examples, or it's out in public as a normal un-celeb situation, WE women do it all the time!

Is Kristen possessive of Rob?
Well let's look at the evidence shall we?

There, but Not-Quiet-Yet...
2008; during the whirlwind Twilight promotion and intensive interest about Kristen and her co-star Robert Pattinson - how they had 'amazing sexual chemistry' according to their director, Kristen seemed very timid and shy when it came to posing with Rob at the various events they had to promote their movie to. Of course the fact that she was 'dating another actor' at the time seemed to through some people off the scent, the clues where there;

This photo clearly shows Kristen standing with her left arm wrapped around herself 'defensive and protective' as her right arm and hand are up against the front of Rob's chest 'protective barrier.' The suggestion is that she is protecting herself, hence her closed in posture. (arm across her middle, holding onto herself) This is seen as nervous behaviour; nervous of her situation (public setting) as well as nervous standing with the person beside her. Her arm is up and the back of her hand is displayed against Rob's chest (don't come any closer) this is also seen as nervous posturing. She is worried physically of Rob coming any closer or leaning any closer towards her. Both of her 'physical expressions' are in fact seen as her way of being very 'aware' of the person beside her as in 'physically aware.' And this is not a repulsive indicator or her BL and facial 'micro expressions' would indicate this. It's more about her awareness to her 'physical attraction' rather than her 'physical repulsion'

Again, we have the same situation; Kristen's arm is once again across her middle holding and protecting herself, putting some 'distance' between herself and Rob 'physically' Once more it also shows by doing this that she is 'physically aware' of Rob and of course by this stage the continuous interest that 'hold' they had on one and other was creating quite a stir in the 'Twilight fandom' This would not have helped them one bit; if by the suggestion that was being played out at the time that Rob was indeed very vocal about his attraction towards Kristen, this in turn would have made her very nervous about being around him. Knowing people would pick up on the 'physical attraction' or 'sexual chemistry' that their director had spoken very loudly about.

The premiere in Los Angeles actually told a different story. Not only was it one of the largest that both Rob and Kristen attended, but it was on her 'own backyard' as it were. While Rob looked and appeared 'physically nervous' Kristen actually looked more relaxed of the two. Her simple coy smiles and generous support of Rob as he stood beside her, indicated she was more aware of her surroundings, but at the same time, still very aware of him. It was coming to the end of the lengthy promotion of the movie which would have contributed to her more relaxed state, this photo for me showed just how far Kristen had come in being able to stand in the same place as Rob and not react nervously to it. Her body is turned towards Rob's as he holds her very close - their bodies have aligned up quite snugly. There is no hand up between them creating a barrier, she has not turned herself away physically as she stands, but instead has turned herself in towards him.

2009; was all about shy responses and timid expressions, indicating the need to try and hide the 'physical attraction' that by the early part of 2009 and shooting New Moon - had become very apparent.
There was also a separation by means of filming different projects and by this stage, the fandom that had once been called 'Twilight' decided to separate and call itself 'Rob and Kristen or Robsten' supporters and 'Non-Rob and Kristen or Nonsten supporters' i.e; those that believed there was a relationship blooming and those that believed there was nothing there, but two people playing at being a fake relationship. Generally made up of women lusting over Rob (see my description of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.)

Although physically Kristen is not suggesting the 'possessive barrier' here;  she is however, physically close up against Rob's length as tightly as possible. Her whole posture of being 'tucked in underneath his arm' is very much seen as a protective secure stance. No longer worrying about the 'physical barrier' the whole 'personal space' issue no longer applies here. The very fact that her body is 'physically' very close and tight up against Rob's 'personal space' indicates very clearly that there is no barrier physical or other wise, between them. This is a clear indication that Rob and Kristen are in a romantic relationship purely by their 'physical' Body Language.

A far cry from the year before as they stand very closely together backstage at the MTV Movie Awards. There is no arm across her middle, instead she holds is reassuringly at her side. There is no hand up between her body and Rob's, instead she is holding him around his back and pulled in close enough, that they appear 'physically comfortable' with one and other - hips and legs are aligned with one and other. The following day; Rob had to leave to begin two months working on a movie while Kristen remained in LA to film a movie of her own. The fact they were caught the next day by the media staying at a 'private' getaway in LA prior to Rob leaving, only fuelled the suggestion that they were both very much together.

With the knowledge of most likely a relationship between Rob and Kristen; so came the need for to try and hide it. Not because of the shame of being involved while shooting a movie, about a couple who were...involved with one and other. But it was more a case of 'protecting what was theirs' and not giving into temptation of being seen together, to fuel the already desperate need to know 'where they or weren't they' together? Rob and Kristen chose a classic example of 'physical avoidance' which in fact in BL, only makes the situation more prominent. Going from 'physically nervous' to 'physically protective' their close proximity of one and other is seen as strained and awkward, because they are 'physically together' instead of just giving into the basic human psychology and stand beside one and other - Rob and Kristen seem to almost repel each other in keeping their distance. This is seen in many couples who are trying to hide their 'physical closeness' especially when others are watching them. None more so that in a job where you are always seen in the public eye. To avoid giving into speculation you believe that by 'putting some distance' that will throw people off, when in fact it does the complete opposite.

Of course, then you break all the rules by keeping some distance, but at the same time, forget and gravitate towards each other anyway. Trying to remain on good behaviour only works when both are doing it at the same time. Leaning in and whispering to each other, pulling on his or her shirt to bring them closer or indeed in front of the press and photographers, grab his hand under the table and give it a quick squeeze, doesn't help in alleviate the interest, now does it?

When all else fails; when you have tried to keep your distance while in public. Stand several feet apart to indicate you have zero interest. Hide yourselves away whenever possible; cosy dinners for two and booking rooms in hotels with an adjoining door in between (just in case) why not decide to do a photo shoot, not of your characters who everyone adore, but of yourselves - Rob and Kristen. Have a romantic setting of a luxurious home, gorgeous dresses and a motorbike thrown in for good measure. A bed of roses and a very clever 'daring and seductive' theme for said photo shoot...oh and while you are at it, the interview will also consist of 'who knows who best' or 'The Newly-wed game' as it was aptly titled. If anyone still dismissed the idea that Rob and Kristen where NOT together, i think it's fair to say that the photograph above; the pose, the seductive meaning (Rob's hand planted firmly on Kristen's hip, Kristen's hand placed tentatively on Rob's chest) - that they were indeed together. 

We Finally Get The Message - He is Mine!
By the time 2010 came along which led nicely into today - Rob and Kristen have slowly shown just how 'together and happy' they really are. Despite the rumours and suggestions otherwise; both have been able to make their 'working relationship' and 'personal relationship' work - providing they keep as much out of the spotlight as possible. And that has meant hiding and not going to places where they will be seen and hounded by the press or fans alike.

The photograph taken with Taylor Lautner on the other side (not seen in this pic) was for EW's countdown to the movie  Eclipse; showing a very comfortable Rob, Kristen and Taylor on the cover and inside the magazine. It also showed a very comfortable Rob and Kristen posing; her hand on Rob's chest just touching the top of his shirt, exposed neck and chest area - Kristen looks very content as she stands close beside him, was Kristen already telling the female population now that 'He Is Mine?'

Playing out the scene of 'will we or won't we kiss?' yet again, to the braying public; Kristen did touch Rob's chest quiet frequently, even going so far as to pinch his nipples once or twice. An indication perhaps of when he has gone to far or was it simply her way of saying 'behave or else?'

Her micro expressions on her face are always a joy to watch, Kristen can be very animated when she wants to be. But the fist full of Rob's suit during the Eclipse Premiere in LA, allows you to catch a glimpse of Kristen putting her mark on the man she is with, by holding on tightly to him.

While photo shoots, premieres, movies and across the country absences; Rob and Kristen still found time to be with one and other. This simple display of affection from Rob while Kristen and he are in Montreal (Kristen shooting On the Road and Rob visiting) is a very personal and intimate message from him. He is very protective of Kristen and very aware of her near by. A gentle reassuring hand on her shoulder is what your partner does when you are together - the male pride in suggesting 'She Is With Me'

This year has seen a more 'forward' Kristen, a more confident woman, has come out from under the cloud of nervous energy and timid shyness. And in it's place, is a woman who knows what she wants, owns what is hers and is no longer afraid of letting it be seen.

First indication of a very forward and comfortable Kristen, was seen at the People's Choice Awards. Having spent a few months working on Breaking Dawn part one and two respectively. As her name was called for the category she won in; Kristen made a show of letting Rob know she was there, even when it was Taylor who helped her up onto the steps. It was as if a silent conversation had transpired between them; as she rubbed his knee gently and protectively whilst standing. Rob of course, taking the micro expression as Kristen being affectionate, clapped happily along with everyone else. A proud smile on his face only for the woman standing in front. It was the first time really Kristen put herself 'out there' by showing for all intents and purposes some tender PDA.

Maybe it had a lot to do with the 'personal and intimate' moments between their characters in Breaking Dawn; that brought Kristen out of her shell, as she touches her 'newly wed husband' lovingly while surrounded by a bevy of 'extras' for the 'Carnival scene.'

He's Mine!

Just like her alter-ego Bella; Kristen has taken to 'laying her hand on her man' every opportunity she has got this year. From filming Breaking Dawn and attending award shows...photo stills of the movie, has been another place where she has shown just how much Rob Pattinson is very much hers.

While Rob had to go on a Water for Elephants promotion after seven months shooting BD 1 and 2; Kristen appeared by his side whenever she could. Even for events like the WFE/NYC premiere, and looking after their newly acquired dog called Bear.

Finally wrapping up BD 1 and 2, signing up for another movie while Rob began shooting another one of his - Rob and Kristen became very busy, with of course the odd awards show in between to attend.

Ah yes - Kristen allowing those to know she owns what she owns, and she most definitely owns Rob here doesn't she? Gone is the coy smiles and tentative looks; here Kristen is very 'possessive' in her clutching onto Rob's chest. Her fingernails practically clawing at him, as they stand and pose for the MTV Movie Awards earlier this year.

Even when standing beside other actors both have performed with in previous movies; Kristen still can't help touching Rob's chest.

When they reunited publicly again in July, it was for this years CC event in which for the first time, they openly talked about Breaking Dawn; weddings, honeymoon sex and having a baby. Both Rob and Kristen looked relaxed as they joked with one and other, sly intimate glances, coy smiles and constant touching under the table.

Every chance they got, Rob and Kristen were both intimate and playful with each other. It was a joy to watch, because it give an indication that they were very 'happy and secure' with their relationship to allow glimpses of it in public. Something they had avoided doing since they began dating.

From screen to real life; Kristen is showing very clearly who she belongs to. It's not a case of fantasy and reality crossing over, because i don't believe there ever was a line drawn between the two alternative universes. Rob has been very aware of his attraction towards Kristen right from the word go, it's just taken Kristen a little bit longer to understand that attraction and finally give into it.

Now it's a simple case of Kristen is finally happy to show the world just how much she loves being with her 'man.' A man that is most definitely sought after (see Brad Pitt) by legions of women all wanting the spot Kristen has right now and she knows this. Hence i believe the change in her behaviour and the sly, smug smiles both she and Rob displayed as they stood together in San Diego. Kristen is saying very clearly here to all the women out there 'Hands Off He's Mine!'
